It is estimated that almost 30 million Americans or 18.7 percent of the population suffer form mental and emotional problems in any given six-month period.

In the United States, more than 50 percent of all mental health treatment is provided by social workers. These professionals assist patients and their families in coping with mental and emotional problems and their consequences. Hospitals, psychiatric clinics, community mental health centers, public and private clinics, home-based agencies and non-profit organizations all employ social workers to provide intervention with clients who are experiencing mental health problems.
