The 2007 TUFW men’s soccer team had a growing year. Jeff Phillips took over as the head coach of a soccer program that won two games the previous year and returned only three players and added three upperclassmen. The remainder of the 13-member squad were freshmen or transfer students.
Returning for the Falcons were senior goalie Ben Carowan, senior defensive back Adam Zimmerman and sophomore defensive back Andrew Shupp. The senior captains provided leadership that brought the group together and the extra boost in many of the games to keep the score close. Shupp set a solid example. He always came to play, even with injuries. The team also included one female member, midfielder Lorelei Carver.
The Falcons started off the year very optimistic of what was ahead, losing their first two games by one goal a piece. The team was, however, able to win its first game of the season in front of the home crowd on Homecoming & Parents’ Weekend. The team’s final record was 2-14-1.
Even through this season’s struggles, the soccer program is looking positive with the leadership of Coach Phillips. TUFW is adding women’s soccer as one of its intercollegiate sports next fall. Coach Phillips has already begun recruiting for next year’s women’s team. As for the men’s program, prospective recruits are already contacting Coach Phillips. Be on the lookout as we hope to see great things come from the soccer programs in the near future.
