Philosophy
The Intercollegiate Athletic Department of Taylor University Fort Wayne endorses and supports the institution’s mission of "educating young men and women for lifelong learning and for ministering the redemptive love of Jesus Christ to a world in need." The Athletic Department embraces the development of excellence in our programs as we focus on academic excellence, athletic success, spiritual maturing, and social growth as we educate people for a life of faith and service to our churches and communities. Our challenge is to build quality programs that enables each student/athlete to become stronger in mind, body, and spirit as we experience what it means to love God and neighbor and to instill within each student/athlete the attitude of a Christ-like servant in all of life.
The Taylor University Fort Wayne Athletic Department further recognizes the following philosophy:
- The opportunity to develop Christian character, spiritual maturity, ethical living, athletic excellence, along with a proper sense of fair play.
- The Athletic program is an integral part of the total university experience involving students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The program should promote pride in the university as we represent Jesus Christ our Lord not only in the arena of competition but in the lives of each student/athlete.
- The intercollegiate athletic program is an avenue to develop the understanding of teamwork, respect for authority, appreciation of rules and regulations governing the program and the activities, and the dedication and commitment needed to compete on the college level.
- Each coach is a committed Christian who understands their profession is an opportunity to teach, mentor, and model the standards of Christian living. We want each coach to understand the dignity of each player, official, and personnel both as teammates or opponents.
- We encourage and attempt to build leadership qualities in our student/athletes through mentoring, competition, and example. Student/athletes are encouraged to seek leadership opportunities through other university avenues such as student government or student leadership positions. Athletics provide excellent training through dedication, teamwork, time awareness, and competition developed with an understanding and respect for specific guidelines.
- We want our student/athletes to gain respect and understanding for individuals from other backgrounds and cultures.
