Calvin H. English Library
Calvin H. English Library is a facility representing
state-of-the-art practices, technologies and flexibility in response to
the ever-changing learning environment. The library was completed and
opened for use for the fall 2004 academic year.
Anita Gray, director of the library, shares, "The ambiance is wonderful. The marked increase in library utilization and the reality that we have adequate space to expand our holdings are incredible blessings."
The
over 41,000 square foot facility is comprised of three levels and
represents the cutting edge practices, technologies and flexibility in
response to the ever-changing learning environment. The new library
also houses the University's 80,000 volume collection and contains
approximately 8,000 periodicals.
A variety of "smart" conferencing, seminar and small group study rooms are available for students and the public alike. Desktop and laptop PCs are available for use in the library and over 60 data ports are accessible throughout the building. Wireless coverage is available throughout the building. A children's reading area provides a comfortable and fun environment in the building's lower level.
The
main level features the reference collection/services, AV
collection/listening/viewing, library instruction room, group study
rooms, current periodicals, circulation, staff/administrative offices
and casual seating. The upper level houses the monograph collection,
bound periodicals, quiet study area, group study rooms and additional
casual seating. The lower level houses the Instructional Materials
Center (IMC), children's collection, reading area, seminar room, IMC
work area and archives.
The library was named for Dr. Calvin H. English in recognition for his contributions to the health and well being of the persons and community of Fort Wayne and in appreciation of the generosity of the English-Bonter-Mitchell Foundation to Taylor University Fort Wayne.
The
$7.8 million library ($5.3 million construction and equipment, $2.5
million endowment) was the second scheduled building project for TUFW
from the $75 million Taylor Tomorrow capital campaign.
Project funding for the Library came from a combination of gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Foundations contributing to the project included: The Lilly Endowment, Inc., Charles Kuhne Charitable Foundation, Lincoln Financial Group Foundation, Inc., English Bonter Mitchell Foundation, Howard P. Arnold Foundation, Edward M. and Mary McCrea Wilson Foundation, Fort Wayne Community Foundation, Ian and Miriam Rolland Foundation, The Keiser Foundation, The Lutheran Foundation, and The Niblick Foundation. Additional project funding for the Library came from a large bequest from alumnus, Dr. George Powers.
The Library is located south of Witmer Hall and connects to the Eicher Student Commons.
