Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between high school and college? What’s the food like? How much do I have to study?

It’s important to ask lots of questions when investigating colleges. Read below to find answers to the questions above and more. What are your questions? If you have some that are not listed here, just contact our office for the answer!

Are there any student organizations to participate in?
Yes! Some examples include: TSO (Taylor Student Organization), a student-led cabinet that seeks to act as a communication channel between students and faculty members (student government). SAC (Student Activities Council) plans and carries out a variety of co-curricular activities both on and off-campus. MAC (Multicultural Awareness Council) seeks to increase sensitivity to cultural topics in society through various events and meetings. TWO (Taylor World Outreach) provides students with opportunities for spiritual growth through various service projects and missions trips.

Are there opportunities to be involved in ministry?
The area churches love to have Taylor students involved with their ministries. Whether teaching Sunday school or volunteering with youth groups, you have tons of opportunities. And not just the ministry majors, but the majority of Taylor students choose to be involved in local church ministry, Christian organizations, and community service.

Can I have a car on-campus?
Yes. From day one, you can keep your car with you at TUFW.

Do I have to know my major before I start college?
No!  Many students do not decide their major until their sophomore year of college, and even then, the typical student will change his/her major at least once during four years.

Do I have to study much in college?
Yes you have to study. Probably more than you did in high school. Whereas now, you probably study half as much as you're in class – once you're in college, you'll most likely study twice as much as you're in class. Lots of reading! TUFW is challenging, but if you study consistently and seek help when needed, you'll be fine. Don't be afraid to ask for help – tutoring is available, and we have a whole office devoted to working with you and helping you succeed here at TUFW.

Do you have study abroad programs?
Definitely. Students go anywhere from Lithuania, to Egypt, to Ireland, to London (Oxford). There are so many more options and you can choose to go overseas for one month or one semester.

Does TUFW offer missions trips?
Yes – trips to Jamaica, Romania, Ecuador, New York and numerous other places here in the US and overseas are amazing experiences. Typically, missions trips are during J-term (the month of January).

Does Taylor require SAT II tests?
No

How do I choose a college?
Look at a few different options – don't just look into one college. Consider the programs, professors, financial aid, campus atmosphere, faith, results, size, and location. Then, decide what’s important for you and seek out the best college fit. (Don't forget to ask for help from your Enrollment Counselor!)

How do I choose my major?
Investigate what you like – talk to people in the particular field that interests you and be "hands on" in that field whenever possible. These things will happen in college too, but the more "research" you do before, the more direction you'll have once you start your college classes. Ultimately, God will lead you down the right path – just trust His plan!

How is your music program?
In addition to our music major, we have two choral ensembles, various instrumental ensembles, and a jazz assembly. Private lessons are also available on all instruments and in voice.

Is TUFW's Fort Wayne campus too small?
Depending on the campus atmosphere you're looking for, TUFW could be a very good fit. With a campus size of 650 students, there are so many advantages. Personal attention from professors, opportunities in many organizations and teams, an easy transition from high school, and the list could go on. The best way to decide if TUFW is the right size for you and if it’s the right college for you, is to visit!

Is it hard to adjust to college and being away from home?
It is an adjustment, but attending a smaller university will help with this adjustment. Once you're on campus, you'll begin to meet new friends and feel valued by them as well as the TUFW staff and faculty. Each person here at TUFW cares about you and wants to make the transition smooth for you and your parents.

Is it hard to find a job in Fort Wayne?
No. There are so many options close to campus. We also have a board for off-campus job postings (typically babysitting jobs and church ministry opportunities).

Is it hard to get an on-campus job?
Not typically. Just talk to different departments or offices and ask if they have any job openings. Also check job postings around campus and online.

Is it hard to get scholarships or loans?
No. Our Financial Aid office will be there with you every step of the way. Over 90 percent of our full-time students receive financial aid and the average aid package is $14,000. TUFW offers many scholarships you may automatically qualify for and some that you can apply for. It’s also a good idea to start looking now for outside scholarships. Just contact your Admissions ounselor or the Financial Aid office if you need assistance in this area.

SAT or ACT?
Either one is fine. We recommend taking both if possible because some students may do better in one than the other and we look at whichever score is higher/better for admission and scholarships.

Sports?
Varsity sports include men’s and women’s basketball, men's and women's cheerleading, men’s soccer, and women’s volleyball. A ton of intramural sports are also available.

What is chapel like?
Chapel meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 am to 10:50 am. We typically join together for praise and worship with our student-led worship band and vocal team. Then we have a speaker, who could be a professor, local pastor, special guest, or Taylor student. We also have special chapels that are devoted entirely to a certain group or organization, such as our drama team, missions opportunities, multicultural awareness, Prison Fellowship Ministries, etc.

What is the student/prof ratio at Taylor?
14:1

What is the typical class size for Freshman?
20-25 students (some general education classes may have more) For upperclassman? 10-20 students (more specialized classes tend to be much smaller)

What is there to do during the week and on weekends?
There’s always something going on at TUFW. Whether it’s a huge event (80’s Roller-skating, Harvest Carnival, Airband, etc.) or just something small (coffee house, Steak-n-Shake run, movie night, etc.), students find lots of ways to keep busy and have fun. RA’s (Resident Assistants) and SAC (Student Activities Council) all help to plan these events.

What percentage of minority students are on campus?
11 percent

What?s it like in the residence halls?
So much happens in the residence halls. Bonding with friends, fun times, crazy times, Bible studies, pick-a-dates, hall meetings, roommates, sharing a bathroom – and everything else! Living in a residence hall really adds to your overall college experience.

What?s so great about living on-campus?
SO much! In addition to fun in the residence halls, you're also able to be involved in much more than you could simply commuting. You quickly become a part of the Taylor community and when you actually live with your friends, it deepens those relationships. And from a practical side, staying up until 2 am talking to your roommate isn't hard if you don't have a 30 minute drive to campus for class the next morning!

What?s the food like?
Good! And you have lots of options. Every day, hot meals are prepared for you – in addition, you may choose a "grill" item (pizza, hamburgers, etc.), or salad, or deli sandwiches, or cereal and bagels – and don't forget all kinds of drinks and soft-serve ice cream!
