Student Records - TUFW
Can I have access to my son's/daughter's grades and/or student records?
TUFW certainly encourages the active support and participation of
parents in our students' academic development. It is important,
however, for this participation to conform with legal requirements.
The Family Educational Rights and privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records.
The University may release, without written consent, items which have been specified as public or directory information for students who are currently enrolled. A student can request, while still enrolled, that the University not release any directory information about him/her. This designation must be furnished in writing to the associate registrar.
At the postsecondary level, the right to inspect is limited solely to the student. Records may be released to parents only under the following circumstances: 1) through written consent of the student, 2) in compliance with a subpoena, and 3) by submission of evidence that the parents declare the student as a dependent on their most recent Federal Income Tax form.
FERPA applies to all students, whether residential or commuter students or students enrolled on-line or by correspondence.
The act applies to all public and private institutions of higher education that receive funds made available under programs administered by the Department of Education, including federal grant monies, Pell grants, Guaranteed Student Loan Programs and other such funds. If an institution receives funds under one or more such programs, the regulations apply to the recipient as a whole, including each component or department within the institution. If an institution does not come into compliance, the Department of Education is authorized to terminate all or any portion of the institution's federal funds."
Verifications of enrollment for health insurance, car insurance and scholarships can be obtained by the student from the registrar's office. the registrar's office is required by federal law to have the student (residential, commuter, on-line or correspondence) request this in writing. The student's signature is necessary for the release of this information.
